He was planning to use some sort of wood-element technique. Of course, that seems to have failed, but perhaps not?
What's more, take a good look here: Naruto 481 page 03 | One Manga There's a few things going on here that should be noted.
After he got stabbed, he immediately turned, and stumbled a good deal away from where the battle took place before imploding... Why? What does this mean? He was mortally wounded so escape wasn't an option.
Perhaps he was trying to get away from the tree he planted, to keep it from getting caught in the blast from the sealing jutsu. But what purpose would that serve? All it means is that Madara would now also have all of the unused Sharingan eyes from Danzo's arm(which stayed with the tree)... That is, unless that jutsu he mentioned is still going to take effect somehow... I doubt it would have the power to restore him to life, especially since he seemed to be expecting to die.
Personally, I'd say there's definitely more to Danzo's story. I mean, I doubt it will end with a flashback/question like that... *shrug*
Of course, there's always the possibility that he just did so by chance (because when you're dying you don't tend to think clearly...) and for the sake of the plot. Specifically, I'm referring to Karin here. Since Danzo moved away from that spot, her body wasn't caught in the "blast".
Sure, she got stabbed, but it probably wasn't a vital spot(Sasuke was aiming for Danzo's heart, not hers). Honestly, though, I don't know what she'd do even if she WERE alive...
Okay, I'm done. Just thought I'd give you guys some things to think about

I didnt see a seal for a wood element technique. Are you talking about this? "the roots should have stayed hidden in the ground" If im not mistaken thats a metaphor. He is the leader of Root after all.

Well, a tree DID burst out of his arm two seconds later xD

Yeah. But they probably wouldn't be fooled by something like that on its own.
Another thing that bothered me which I failed to point out before is why he supposedly never used Shisui's eye. If it was me, I would've used Izanagi at the last second just to ensure that Madara didn't get it. Perhaps he couldn't, because that wasn't really his eye? Remember, Shisui's genjutsu was supposedly undetectable. If he used it in tandem with a clone he may have been able to fool them.
In that case, Danzo's with the tree somehow. How? Who knows. We never really knew much about mokuton to begin with, besides a few weak examples in the form of Yamato. Plus, it's also Orochimaru's handiwork, so I might suggest a mokuton version of his replacement jutsu. It'd be something like Kirabi's I suppose?
Meh, I'm probably overthinking things, getting my hopes up for nothing... *shrug*

There's more to that too, I'd say. Here's my guesses.
1% chance that that's all there is to it. She's dead. End of story. Like Kisame.
60% chance she's dying, but will have a nice flashback next chapter or something.
10% chance she's not mortally wounded...
10% chance she can heal herself.
10% chance that one of the above 2 are true, and Sasuke already knows(hey, I can hope )
8.9% chance that sakura shows up too late for sasuke but sees and heals her.
0.1% chance that the last one is true, and she also ends up joining Konoha or something
Dramatically self sacrificing a wood clone would totally fit danzou's character.
captain Yamato is supposed to be the only one alive who can use wood element jutsu because the first hokage's dna was infused into him as a child by Orochimaru. If danzo can suddenly use wood element jutsu's then ill be pissed. Its a tacked on ability and a flaw in the story.

... You didn't notice?... xD
Yes, he was able to use it, and it's not a flaw any more than Yamato was, seeing as he got it from the same place(Orochimaru, that is).
