Honestly though I think the closest we're going to get with finding out is that he felt responsible for everyone's (people he cares about) death. But like I stated before I don't think there's a reason.

what ichijin and filip said is correct however vile is correct in a way "authour" and anime creators can run there stories however things are not set in stone tell the creator says it's true he could have just given kakashi the ms as a way to balance charcter powers for all we now or just cause he can... rinnegan it's good your thinking logically but if the creator(kishi) wants to show you he would have done so I recon it's most likely from obito's death that triggered it we may never now but the answers given to you so far is the best guesses as to how we got it we don't now anything else unless someone wants to make a theorie that'll explain these things then your probabily not gonna get many better answers that differ greatly, personally I don't think it's a huge deal but if your still curious you are probabily gonna have to wait for further chapters for a definite answer

There's plenty of other ways for him to become overpowered other than giving him MS. At the same time, we're not even sure if it is MS or not... He called it that(and it basically looks like it) but Kakashi didn't even know how to get MS, so he probably didn't do it on purpose.

I think we all have times of reflection, maybe he was having a small pity party by himself over a good book *cough* and thinking about how "everyone close to him is dead" or maybe when he was sitting by Obito's grave.

Yes Madara's brother is Izuna back on topic, I think there's more than one way of getting MS I think that Itachi and Kakashi did the same thing to get there's and thats why there's looks so much alike.
