I just went ahead and borrowed some definitions from Urban dictionary for ya Sky cause they phrase it better than I can.

In the Western culture, people confuse otaku to be something positive like "Guru".
Basically the term Otaku has been applied to people who are completely obsessed with anime. It doesn't have as much of a negative connotation outside of Japan, but its still not something a lot of people wish to be called.
