light is not a criminal as he is killing for a just cause. but that cause also has a criminalistic side to it. he wants to become a god by killing so in that veiw he is a criminal.

First of all, I thought that this thread was dead. For almost two months, nobody replied.
Many of you pointed out the value of life: that a life should not be taken. Definetly, Light tried to be a god; he managed but for a very short period of time. I have put the question is Light a criminal due to his unique way of acting. He doesn't take a knife and stabes his victim, he just writes some names in a note (like I do when I want to make a list of my class mates for example). Light does not manipulate in a physical way his victims (like actually touching them) and my question was if regarded from this point of view, Light may not be considered a criminal?

Light is definitely a criminal. A criminal is someone that breaks the law, and by knowingly bringing the deaths of hundreds and thousands of people, even though they were [usually] criminals, he was still breaking the law. Not to mention he was extremely heartless while doing it.

The question should be whether what Light did was wrong. Of course he's a criminal. The founding fathers of America were criminals.

What about the innocent people he protected? The world was made a safer place. Its easy to say it was not his "job" if you have never been a victim. Ten of thousands of lives were saved because fewer murderers and warmongers were around. Would you have traded their lives for the lifes of the innocent? If he didn't do it who would?
